 About 25 years ago, salon brands started showing up on drug store shelves.  We all know the jokes. Some stylists were outraged, but as more and more brands showed up on drug store shelves, many began to accept it as a necessary evil.

Next we started seeing our brands for sale in chain salons for less than our cost. Then our brands showed up in "Big Box" stores. What was going on? We at Niche are pretty sure we know, but we won't speculate(at least not in print). And, if we're right, it isn't going to get any better.

 Some salons made an effort to combat this by having their own products made, a concept known as "private label." But in the past, this was very difficult for a single salon owner, due to minimum purchasing requirements. If often meant buying thousands and thousands of products all at once and having very little say in their quality, which was also true of the packaging. Usually not very impressive.
